JD Wetherspoon plans to spend £2.5m converting a derelict office building into its sixth site in Liverpool’s city centre.

The pubco has submitted a change of use application to Liverpool City Council and is applying for planning permission to convert the ground and mezzanine floors of the nine-story office building in James Street.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are very keen to open a Wetherspoon pub in James Street. Our pubs have enjoyed great success in Liverpool over the past 20 years and we believe that people in the city will welcome a new Wetherspoon outlet on the site of a derelict building.”

New jobs

Gershon said it was the pubco’s intention to create 70 new jobs as well spending £2.5m developing the site.

“If the pub does get the go ahead, we believe that it will act as a catalyst for further investment in the area around James Street”, he added. “We will await the outcome of the planning decision.”

Liverpool City Council has not set a date to decide upon the application.
