The Sportsman, in Seasalter, Kent, was last week named the top gastropub in the country for the second consecutive year at the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs Awards.

The Michelin-starred pub, run by chef patron Stephen Harris and his brother Phil, scooped the top spot at an exclusive awards ceremony hosted by the Publican's Morning Advertiser on Monday 26 January at Hermitage Road Bar & Kitchen, Hertfordshire.

Harris said: "You sit in the room and you look around and you don't know who's voted for you and you don't know anything except from out of all those really talented, brilliant people you've come out top."

The list was revealed by celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, owner of the double Michelin-starred Hand & Flowers, Marlow, Bucks. East Yorkshire free house the Pipe & Glass Inn came in second place whilst third place was taken by Andrew Pern's Star Inn at Harome, North Yorkshire.

"I'm really heartened to see the Pipe & Glass at number two, a husband and wife team and you know they just put their heart and soul into it. Those kind of places I think are really special," added Harris.
