BBPA releases latest operating cost guide for pubs

Useful benchmarks: BBPA releases its latest edition of its operating cost guide for tied tenants and lesses

Operating costs for tied pubs accounted for between 33% and 40% of total turnover last year, according to the British Beer and Pub Association's (BBPA) latest edition of its operating cost guide.

On 10 July the BBPA published its free latest cost guide for tied tenants and lessees, which breaks down the industry into eight operating models.

The highest operating costs were associated with the "rural character" model, at 40.3% with the lowest at community wet-led pubs (33.2%).

In all cases staffing was the biggest expense ranging from 13.6% in a small community local to 24.1% in rural character pubs and town/country food-led sites.

Useful benchmarks

New for this year are categories for gaming machines and pay-TV for some models, as well as a higher turnover, community pub model.

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA, said: “Our updated report will provide very useful benchmarks that should help anyone thinking of taking on a pub, or those who are already in the trade. It can be downloaded free of charge from our website. It should be a great help to all those running a Great British Pub.”
