Ei Publican Partnership has launched a “how to PR your pub” guide to help its licensees showcase their pubs in the media to help "drive sales by promoting their business to new and existing customers".

The 16-page guide, which is available for publicans to download from Ei's online platform, gives advice on a range of PR topics, including approaching the media; photography; newsworthy stories; press release templates and social media.

Ei Group head of corporate communication Jon Dale said: “This guide has been created to help publicans drive sales by promoting their businesses to new and existing customers.

“It also gives them the opportunity to gain recognition for the excellent work they do day in, day out in their local communities.

“Publicans are incredibly busy people who are juggling a number of tasks at any one time, making it hard to focus on PR.

“This easy-to-use guide gives them the tools, advice and focus they need to market their business across traditional and digital media channels.”

Top media tips

  1. Customers will do their research online – it’s absolutely vital that something positive about your pub appears when they Google your name. An up-to-date website or Facebook page is crucial
  2. Pubs are hubs for local communities and lots of your activities are newsworthy – make sure you shout about it in the local press and promote your pub to new customers
  3. Make friends with local journalists – contact the local newspaper and radio station and invite journalists down for a drink and some food, they won’t bite and it will help build relationships

When asked about the benefits of PR, Alistair Barlow, Ei publican at the Royal Oak, Evesham, Worcestershire, said: “We should not underestimate the value PR brings to our businesses.

“It gives us the perfect platform to talk about what makes our pubs so special and allows us to praise our team publicly.

“It doesn’t need to be hard or intimidating, the local press is always looking for stories, so if you’re doing something different, or better, or new, make sure you let them know by following the steps in this guide.”

Ei Publican Partnerships, the new name for the leased and tenanted division of Ei Group plc, has more than 4,500 properties across England and Wales that are predominantly run as leased and tenanted pubs.
