Beer Day Britain is round the corner when hundreds of thousands of beer drinkers will be celebrating and saying ‘Cheers to Beer’.

The annual activity, which always takes place on 15 June, was launched by Jane Peyton who is an award-winning beer sommelier, drinks educator, writer, broadcaster, pub expert and public speaker.

The focus of the day is the national Cheers To Beer (#cheerstobeer) toast at 7pm on Saturday 15 June and is marked across the UK and overseas with many people joining the trend on social media.

Two reasons to visit pub

Peyton, who founded the School of Booze – a drinks education consultancy and corporate events production company – said: “This year, Beer Day Britain is on a Saturday and the day after is Father’s Day – two reasons to entice customers to visit the pub or taproom and say Cheers To Beer.

“Beer brands, pubs and taprooms, and the public always get behind Beer Day Britain to celebrate the country’s national alcoholic drink.

“Whether that is hosting special events, offering beer and food matching menus, or assembling a team to compete in Beer Day Britain’s Got Talent by singing ‘Cheers To Beer’, the official anthem of Beer Day Britain, 15 June is always a fun and positive celebration.”

Magna Carta date

It celebrates beer from mainstream lager to limited-edition craft beer and everything in between no matter where it is brewed. The date is significant because that is also the date Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. The great charter mentions ale in Article 35: “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn.”

Ale was so important in England in 1215 that it was cited in one of the most significant legal documents in history. Today, beer and pubs are still central to British life and seven out of 10 drinks sold in a pub are beer.
