Robert Humphreys replaces Philip Kolvin as head of Best Bar None

Philip Kolvin was chairman of Best Bar None for two years

Philip Kolvin has stepped down from his role as chairman of the Best Bar None scheme.

He will be replaced in the short term by current vice chairman of the initiative, and outgoing honorary secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, Robert Humphreys. A search has already begun for a permanent replacement for Kolvin, who had headed up Best Bar None for two years.

The initiative, which is open to all licensed restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs, was piloted in Manchester in 2003 and has now been rolled out in more than 100 towns and cities. It rewards responsible management and efforts made to combat alcohol related crime and disorder.

Key scheme

Kolvin said: “I have been delighted to have helped in the foundation of the Social Responsibility Alliance, which has brought the voluntary schemes together as never before, and even more so to have witnessed the inclusion of Best Bar None as a key component of the Government’s National Alcohol Strategy.

“With a national director in place for the first time, Best Bar None is, in my judgment, well-placed to respond to the opportunities for growth and public recognition this brings, with the assistance of a strong and committed Board and Management Committee. This being so, it is time for me to hand over the reins. I shall remain a friend and supporter of the scheme, and look forward to its future achievements.”

Tim Hulme, the chief executive of the British Institute of Innkeeping and a director of Best Bar None, said: “Philip leaves Best Bar None in an extremely strong position with the highest profile it has ever had within Government and beyond and we thank him for his invaluable input and guidance. It has been a privilege working alongside him, and he leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the future.”

New awards

The news comes as Wrexham was announced as the latest area to set up a Best Bar None scheme.

Wrexham County Borough Council, which is administering the awards, has said for the first year it will apply only to the town centre but the plan is to widen it out. Council officers have been handing out application forms in the town centre this week.
