Pubs in the papers: Caribbean menus, Bale lookalikes, and arson

This week's pubs in the papers includes a pub with Caribbean food in Worcester, a Gareth Bale lookalike scaling a pub roof, pub arsonists and shootings.

A taste of the Caribbean – in Worcestershire

Worcestershire News and The Voice reported that a Nigerian chef has reopened a pub in Holt Heath, near Worcester with a speciality Caribbean menu.

Licensee of the Red Lion, Victorian Cullen, who also runs a catering business, said staple British classics like fish and chips will be on the menu alongside Caribbean recipes such as goat curry, coconut ox tail curry, jerk chicken and spicy Caribbean mussels.

‘Stokie twist’ for new GK opening

A new Farmhouse Inn from Greene King in Stoke apparently has a ‘Stokie twist’, according to the Stoke Sentinel.

The 40^th pub from the GK brand includes local pottery from the nearby Moorlands Pottery, designed by local schoolchildren.

Beers from local brewer Titanic are also being specially supplied.

Derelict pub keeps getting attacked by arsonists

The Express and Star reported that a derelict pub has been continually attacked by arsonists. The Old Bush in Pelsall near Walsall was attacked twice last weekend.

The pub has been on the market for two years having originally opened in the 1800s.

The BBC reported that a man had been arrested in connection with a shooting outside of a pub in Bristol.

A man was shot in the stomach outside of the Jolly Roger pub in the Easton area of the city in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Pub with licensing issues

The Raven in Crewe has had activities restricted following ‘irregularities’ in its licensing agreement, according to the Crewe Chronicle.

When visiting the pub following a noise complaint linked to a marquee in the car park, the council’s licensing team discovered that there were irregularities in the premises license details: the designated premises supervisor and premise license holder were no longer involved with the premise.

Therefore certain licensable activities could not be carried out on the premise – including a wake.

And finally…How one village pub was ‘saved’

The Yorks Press’ beers and pubs column featured the Aldwark Arms as a good example of how a village local can be turned around.

Formerly the Bay Horse, the pub closed a few years ago.

But following investment from two local brothers, it reopened as a destination pub with locally sourced food and beer.
