The campaign by Brighton residents to save one of the UK’s best known and loved music venues has received a boost after being backed by another pub in the city.

The Brighton Bierhaus has agreed to host a Day for the Greys on Wednesday 20 December in an effort to raise funds for the pub that was put up for sale earlier this year.

As reported by The Morning Advertiser, Brighton residents launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £300,000 in order to take over the Greys pub after it was put on the market by the Ei Group.

With the help of the Plunkett Foundation, residents of the city’s Hanover area formed a Friends of the Greys action group with the aim of purchasing the pub’s freehold and securing its survival as Brighton’s second community-owned pub.

Brighton Bierhaus will donate 20% of all money taken over the bar from midday on the 20th until midnight to the crowdfunding campaign launched by local residents to save the Hanover venue.

Brighton Bier brewery director Stephen Whitehurst explained that his company felt solidarity with the community bid having earlier this year bought the Bierhaus, formerly the Jury’s Out – another Ei Group pub.

“We strongly believe that Brighton needs more independent freehouse pubs that can give people choice and quality when it comes to beer. It’s what we’ve tried to do at the Bierhaus, and we’re sure that, in the community’s hands, the Greys can do a similar job.”

Spokesman for Friends of the Greys, Keith Farmer, said: “I’m one of those who has appreciated what the Bierhaus has brought to this part of Brighton, and it’s fantastic that it is now backing us in such a practical and fun way,” he said.

“Next Wednesday is sure to be a good day and we hope people will drop by the Bierhaus and help us raise the money we need to buy the Greys – simply by drinking beer!”
