Pubs are being urged to show off their sustainability credentials for a chance to feature in the Green Pub Guide 2023.

The guide, which is put together by Heineken SmartDispense and UKHospitality, wants the renewal of the directory to inspire long-term positive sustainable action across the sector.

The 2023 book will include full details of Great Britain’s top green venues and the measures they are taking to be more environmentally friendly.

The initiatives continued from last year include reducing energy usage, creating seasonal zero-waste menus or decreasing water and CO2 wastage with the help of tools such as SmartDispense.

Younger crowd

Heineken research found almost half (46%) of Gen Z and Millennials claim to be more inclined to visit a pub if it was eco-friendly or took part in sustainable initiatives so making it into the guide will promote your business to locals and visitors to your pub.

The judging panel will be looking for inspiring ideas, creative innovation, technological investments, and community initiatives that all show a desire to be more sustainable and kinder to the planet.

Previous ideas from the Green Pub Guide 2022 included removing single-use plastic, creating seasonal zero-waste menus, decreasing water and CO2 wastage with the help of tools such as SmartDispense, collecting rainwater to flush toilets, installing solar panel powered kitchens and installing EV charging points for guests too.

Heineken UK head of sustainability Chelsey Wroe said: “We are excited to be bringing back the Green Pub Guide for its second year.

“We received so many inspiring entries in 2022 and now with the support of UKHospitality for 2023, we’re keen to hear from even more pubs, bars and restaurants that are striving for a more sustainable future.”

Countless examples

Wroe continued: “As well as recognising the great work the hospitality industry is doing, we also want to inspire and support other venues to become more sustainable businesses.”

UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls, this year’s judging partner, added: “There are countless examples of pubs taking action to become more sustainable and this guide is a welcome innovation.

“Not only will it help people plan and enjoy a visit to an eco-friendly pub, but it also sets a great example for the industry to follow – we can’t wait to be involved for its second year.”

All venues need to do is register their interest by completing the form here by Friday 24 February and outline what they are doing to reduce their business’s environmental impact.
