Welsh brewery Tiny Rebel has announced it is temporarily halting all of its canned beer production after reports of lids popping off several batches.

The brewery has also issued a recall of six gyles, stating that an issue with dissolved oxygen (DO) in the cans, causing oxidation and secondary fermentation, was behind the decision.

The affected batches are: 116 - Clwb Tropicana, 122 – Cwtch, 133 - Clwb Tropicana, 144 - Clwb Tropicana, 145 - Clwb Tropicana and 148 - Clwb Tropicana.

In a statement on its website, the brewery said that it would not be using its new canning line again until the problem was resolved.

Drastic colour change

It said: “We last canned on 11 July - we had ruled out the other likely causes of the discolouration and identified that it was limited to cans, and over the past two weeks we have been working with the canning line manufacturer to identify the problem.

“Our conclusion is that dissolved oxygen is at fault for the discolouration.

“Excess DO in the beer has caused oxidation, which has resulted in drastic change in colour and caused a secondary fermentation which has led to the build-up of gas in the can. This pressure has caused the seam of the can to unfurl and for the lids of some cans to pop off.

“Our canning line will not be used again until replacement parts are received from the manufacturer and we are shown that they have solved the problem.”

Refund or replacement offered

Pubs that have beer from the affected gyles should contact either their wholesaler or usual sales rep to organise their return and refund, Tiny Rebel said.

Members of the public with beer from one of the affected beers should email the brewery at gurgrnz@gvalerory.pb.hx.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and will be working hard to ensure all affected customers receive a refund or replacement,” Tiny Rebel added.

Last month, the brewery opened the doors of its new £2.6m production site. The brewhouse has the capacity to produce 5m litres of beer (almost 9m pints), while the site also has its own taproom and kitchen.

Tiny Rebel co-founder Brad Cuummings described the new facility as “world-class”.
